This pic clearly shows a major difference between a carrier landing vs. a landing on a ground-based runway. A naval 'aviator' strives for a minimal 'angle-of-attack' so the action of the tailhook grabbing the arresting wire doesn't slam the nose gear to the deck any more than necessary, whereas an air force 'pilot' approache at a much steeper glide slope and brings the front wheels down softly.
